Niezwykły wizjoner, kompozytor i gitarzysta. Opanował niemalże do perfekcji grę na gitarze dwunastostrunowej. Z wdziękiem porusza się w swojej muzyce miedzy złożonymi schematami, motywami i harmoniami. Słychać w jego muzyce inspiracje amerykańskiej tradycji folkowej, dynamiki post-rockowej, i tez współczesnej klasyki. Członek legendarnej formacji Current 93, kolaborował z 'Hauschka', 'Yann Tiersen' i 'Jozef van Wissem', a w Polsce ostatnio grał w ramach trasy zespołu Swans jako support.

Jego muzyka hipnotyzuje dronami, repetycją wzorów i melodii, które tworzą inteligentną i naładowaną emocjami muzykę. Na ostatnich albumach Blackshaw wprowadził kolejne instrumenty, w tym pianino. Magazyn 'Rolling Stone' pisał o artyście: „jeden z najlepszych i najbardziej oryginalnych instrumentalistów nowej muzyki akustycznej”. Wydawał w Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, Static, Digitalis Industries, Important Records, Tompkins Square, i Young God Records. W październiku 2013 został zaproszony do współpracy przez kompozytora muzyki filmowej Yann Tiersen (Amelia, Good Bye, Lenin!). Powstała ścieżka dźwiękową do piątego odcinka Fantomas, klasycznego filmu niemego z początku XX w reżyserii Louisa Feuillade.

Najnowszy solowy album Jamesa 'Love is the Plan, the Plan is Death' został wydany przez Important Records w 2012. Napisany w czasach wielkiego niepokoju emocjonalnego, jest piękny i słodko-gorzki. Zawiera sześć oryginalnych kawałków, których tytuły pochodzą od opowiadań wielkiego autora science fiction Jamesa Tiptree Jr AKA Alice B. Sheldon. Latem ubiegłego roku ukazała się płyta The Watchers, wspólne nagranie z ukraińskim pianistą Lubomyrem Melnyk.
