W 2009 r., po 15 latach bycia członkiem legendarnego e.s.t i rok po tragicznej śmierci Esbjörna Svenssona, basista tego zespołu Dan Berglund podjął inicjatywę założenia nowego zespołu z ambicją, aby nadal podchodzić do muzyki z taką samą otwartością i delikatnym lekceważeniem konwencjonalnych konwencji gatunkowych, jakie charakteryzowały jego poprzedni zespół.

15 lat później i po 8 wydanych albumach ten kwartet został ważną muzyczną marką w Szwecji i w całej Europie, a wyjątkową cechą ich muzycznego języka to wciąż zaskakująca wielobarwna mieszanka jazzu oraz muzyki rockowej. Tonbruket's first album was released in 2010, and since then, they have won four Grammy Awards and refined the unique blend of jazz, rock, Americana, kraut, psych, folk, and blues that has been their signature from the start. Although their music defies conventional genre definitions, there has always been an unspoken understanding within the band of what Tonbruket is and stands for.

"Even in our most folk or jazz moments, there needs to be some kind of rock or blues at the core. It has to be a twist on it! It becomes a twist when we play together and create together. And that's what's so damn fun about Tonbruket, you're always curious about what ideas the others will come up with," the band explains.

Tonbruket's first five studio albums, Dan Berglund's Tonbruket (2010), Dig It To The End (2011), Nubium Swimtrip (2013), Forevergreens (2016), and Masters of Fog (2019), were released by the renowned German jazz label ACT. The band has completed several tours in both Sweden and Europe and has also found time to compose music for Dramaten productions "Mannen utan minne" and "Undertiden." They have released two critically acclaimed albums, "Doom Country" (2020) and "Fossils" (2023), in collaboration with Swedish alt-country's foremost figure, Christian Kjellvander.

The genre-crossing exploration that Tonbruket has engaged in for 14 years shows no signs of diminishing. According to themselves, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, it's the band's shared love for and approach to classical music that makes them unique. More often than not, it's fairly straightforward chords, harmonies, and melodies that place themselves significantly closer to both rock and classical music than the type of colored chords characteristic of jazz.
