THE MANDATE OF THE FESTIVAL

The Festival consequently aims to present Jewish musical tradition as a living, breathing tissue, which continuously inspires new musical styles and trends in the music of the 21st century. The Festival's uniqueness is expressed in the creation of an artistic bridge between the old and the new. We want the Festival to reach out to the widest and most diverse audiences possible, broadening their view of Jewish culture and tradition, while opening the space for musical search and experimentation.

The Festival is open to many points of view in the spectrum of Jewish culture. It thus contributes to and promotes a better understanding and acceptance of diversity and a dialogue leading to more tolerance and pluralism.

THE 6TH EDITION

The Festival will be inaugurated by a concert in the Warsaw Nożyk Synagogue, followed by the next two days of concerts in the Warsaw's music club „Palladium” and concluded – for the third time, in the Museum of History of Polish Jews. A concert in the Cultural Centre Warsaw-Bemowo, taking place on April 18th, will be a prologue to the Festival.

THE PROGRAM OF THE 6TH EDITION

The unique character of the Festival each year is determined by the projects we commission and create together with the artists for each edition. Up till now we have inspired 15 such endeavors, all of which have been hailed an artistic success.

/Special Project/

23/04 Synagoga im. Nożyków ul. Twarda 6 godz. 20.30

/Special Project/

Bern-Szamburski-Wójciński “Modrzycer klan” (USA + PL)
Alan Bern – one of the most exceptional pianist, accordionists and composers of contemporary Jewish music; Paweł Szamburski – clarinetist and improviser; Ksawery Wójciński – bass player, composer and arranger.
On commission by the “Nadaye” Foundation, these three fantastic instrumentalists prepared a special project entitled: „Modrzyc Klan”. Their inspiration came from the mysticism of Hassidic music, created between the 1820s and 2006, by the members of the Taub family, known by the Modżyc Dynasty. From Ezechiel Ben Tzvi Hirsh Taub – a tzadik from Kazimierz Dolny and the first composer in the family, until the late tzadik Israel Dan Taub, who passed away in 2006, the members of the family were gifted with exceptional musical talent. In their numerous compositions, filled with unmatched beauty and magic, they captured a musical reflection of Hasidic Thought.
The deep waters of emotions and mysticism of Hassidic music is a very comfortable territory for this trio, who move through it with great grace and sensitivity. Paradoxically, the deeper they delve and the closer the get to the source of the Tradition, the more imaginative and surprising their music becomes.

24/04 Klub Palladium u. ZŁota 9 godz. 20:30

The Anakronic Electro Orkestra feat Taron Benson (F r + USA)
AEO quickly gained a reputation of one of the most interesting European klezmer bands, which masterfully combines traditional music with funk and electronic music. The original compositions of the band members are based on Ashkenazy motives played vigorously on classical instruments, supported by extensive electronic background and a DJ.
The courageous and uncompromising merging of musical worlds brought about many collaborations for the AEO with prominent artists of the American Jewish music scene (David Krakauer, Frank London, and others...)
They will be accompanied on the stage by a young female rapper Taron Benson, whose magnetic voice gives the project even more power and energy.

25/05 Klub Palladium u. ZŁota 9 godz. 19:30

Jorgos Skolias and Oleś Duo “Sefardix” (Poland)
The Sefardix project is based on archival Greek-Sephardi songs from the 19th and 20th century. It is a living proof of the inspiring impact of Jewish music on contemporary culture. Performed by a trio of renown Polish jazz musicians: vocalist Jogos Skolias, bass player Marcin Oleś and drummer Bartłomiej Oleś.
This special project created for the second edition of the New Jewish Music Festival, met with enthusiastic reception and high esteem of musical critics. Presented on many stages of Poland and Europe. Their record won a prestigious award from the Polish Radio.
For the past four years the artists have worked on new tunes, lost in the nooks and crannies of history, and they plan to reveal them for us in this edition.

/Special Project/

Zeev Tene + Cukunft (IL + PL)
Cukunft is a terrific Polish ensemble under the lead of guitarist and composer Raphael Rogiński. The mandate of the group is to carry on the musical tradition of Eastern European Jews. The musicians create in-obvious interpretations of archival music, and compose new ones in the spirit of innovative search for new emotions and means of expression.
For the 6th edition of the New Jewish Music Festival, they created a collaboration with Zeev Tene – an Israeli poet and singer, who on account of his tone of voice and stage presence has been dubbed the Israeli Tom Waits. He often addresses ethnic, social and political conflicts in his work, so prevalent for the 21th century. He stigmatizes xenophobia and nationalism, referencing some of his own experiences with his Polish-born family.
Radical, though often composed in the traditional scale, music of Cukunft, creates a fierce and poetic, and at times mystically hypnotic musical performance.

26/04 Muzeum Historii Żydów Polskich ul. Anielewicza 6 godz. 20.00

/Special Project/

Ola Bilińska “Liebelid” (PL)
Ola Bilińska – singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and songwriter. For the New Jewish Music Festival Ola, with her ensemble, will present an original project of Jewish love songs in Yiddish.
Found in old song-books, interwar poetry volumes (poems of Debora Vogel, Awron Rejzen, Zisze Landau and others), and popular in the first half of the 20th century in Poland and the Pale of Settlement, through her these songs gain a new breath of life.
Bilińska discovers anew the magic of these songs and filters them through her own characteristic, minimalistic expression. The result is an intriguing musical project, and a deep emotional and innovative glimpse into the world that is no more.

/Special Project/

Małe Instrumenty (Small Instruments)/Schultz (PL) –
The Małe Instrumenty ensemble is a unique phenomenon in the world. Its leader, Paweł Romańczuk is a musician and composer. The group employs only small instruments for their musical creation – from small musical instruments, through sound toys and curious musical idiosyncrasies to their own music-making constructs and a whole collections of small objects emitting sound.
Bruno Schulz – genius artist of Drohobycz and a Polish Jew, writer, graphic artist, illustrator, literary critic and teacher. His entire body of creation – visual and literary – is characterized by a kind of magic realism, a world caught between reality and dream. Schulz blurs the boundary between reality and myth. Time seems to run in a circle, and reality lives independently.
Enchanted by Schutz's work, Paweł Romańczuk „found” his own music in authors work.
These two worlds as if found each other. As if they have been waiting to meet, in order to create w completely new quality merging the magical space of literature and music.
