The NO SIGNAL Festival came into being as a reaction to the lack of support in the media for explorative young musicians.

Many elements in the music press seem to bemoan the lack of ambition shown by major music festivals, yet almost completely ignore the vibrant scene taking place under their very noses.

This farcical situation reached new extremes when the Warsaw Improvisers’ Orchestra, which is made up of local musicians, played a massive concert at CSW Zamek Ujazdowski, which was funded from the proceeds of concerts given by the same musicians. This was surely one of the biggest musical events that Saturday night, yet here are the stats.

Is it really worth wasting words moaning about the same old shit when there is so much of interest being created by local musicians?
After all, institutional conservatism is deeply ingrained. It can’t be changed overnight. But one or two reviews of a concert or album or a little airplay can literally change musicians’ lives. Not because this might lead to them being snapped up by some major label. But because it might actually allow them to collect a little more cash to fund a quality recording. And that is actually where this money would go in many cases. It goes without out saying that press coverage is also often needed to attract sorely needed funding from grant-awarding bodies.
The NO SIGNAL Festival is an energetic attempt by local musicians to take matters into their own hands. If we are not going to be helped by the media, we will simply help ourselves. We have purposefully made this a free event and programmed a variety of acts, in the hope that we may attract a few people who wouldn’t normally attend such an event.
